Hydrogen Tracker

European hydrogen project tracker

European hydrogen production plants, Hydrogen Valleys and infrastructure projects - pipelines, storage and import terminals - on one map, together with pipeline corridors and refuelling stations. The baseline comes from the IEA's project database and our own research. Open any project and hit “Verify against sources now” to check its status against current primary sources, with every result cited.

Market context

~97 Mt

Global hydrogen demand

Global hydrogen demand runs close to 97 million tonnes a year, but the overwhelming majority is still grey hydrogen made from unabated natural gas or coal, consumed on-site by refining and ammonia production.

IEA, Global Hydrogen Review

<1%

Share that is low-emission

Low-emission hydrogen (renewable or CCS-abated) remains well under 1% of total supply despite years of pipeline announcements - the gap between announced projects and projects that actually reach FID is the single biggest theme in the sector.

IEA, Global Hydrogen Review

3 sectors

Where new demand has to come from

Steel (direct reduction), heavy-duty transport and maritime/aviation e-fuels are the three sectors most forecasts point to as the realistic near-term demand base for clean hydrogen - not the earlier vision of hydrogen heating homes or fuelling passenger cars.

Hydrogen Council, Hydrogen Insights

~5%

Announced projects reaching FID

Historically only a small minority of publicly announced low-emission hydrogen projects reach a positive Final Investment Decision within their originally announced timeline - a key reason a verification layer, not just a headline database, matters for anyone making decisions on this data.

IEA / cross-referenced project tracking

~40% cheaper

China's electrolyzer manufacturing cost lead

Chinese-manufactured alkaline electrolyzer stacks are typically quoted at a significant discount to Western-made equivalents, reshaping developer procurement decisions and prompting EU 'resilience' criteria in Hydrogen Bank auctions that favour non-Chinese content.

IEA, Global Hydrogen Review / BloombergNEF

Where the data comes from

Production projects
IEA Hydrogen Production Projects Database (June 2026 edition), filtered to Europe and cleaned by us.
Infrastructure and flagship projects
Compiled by Aurora Strategy in September 2026 from transmission system operators, project developers, the EU list of Projects of Common Interest and trade press. Covers pipelines, salt-cavern storage, import terminals and ammonia crackers, plus selected production and Hydrogen Valley projects.
Pipeline map
Routes are schematic: each line runs through the corridor's key points, not the surveyed pipe route. Status, length and dates come from operator and project reporting as of September 2026.
Refuelling stations
OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL), retrieved September 2026. The data is volunteer-mapped, so new stations can be missing and closed ones may still appear.
Status updates
Re-checked project by project against current reporting. A status only changes when a cited source supports it - see the methodology below.
Market context and base map
Market figures are indicative, from public IEA, IRENA and European Commission publications. Base map © CARTO, © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Methodology

Every project starts from a baseline status in the seed dataset. Statuses are then re-checked regularly: an automated search looks for recent, project-specific reporting and only changes a status when a real, cited source supports it. If nothing new turns up, the status stays as it is - the point is to catch genuine updates, not to manufacture them. See the full write-up on the project README.
